Just Published！　20^th Anniversary issue of “Sea Dream” vol. 40 : featuring “Pilgrimage to the wooden boat’s capital – Maine, USA

 

2005年に創刊された海のライフスタイルマガジン『Sea Dream（シードリーム）』は、おかげさまで20周年を迎えました。年に2回刊行なので、節目の40号となります。

First published in 2005, “Sea Dream”, a lifestyle magazine dedicated to maritime culture, marks its 20th anniversary this year. We extend our sincere gratitude to our readers for their continued support.

 

20周年記念号の巻頭大特集を飾るのは「木造艇の聖地、米国メイン洲巡礼」。自ら木造ヨットを自作しているほど、木造艇の好きな海洋カメラマン、矢部洋一が米国の木造艇のメッカとされるメイン洲を取材。その歴史や文化、関わる人々を紹介しています。

The feature article of our 20th Anniversary Special Edition is titled “A Pilgrimage to the Wooden Boat’s Capital - Maine, USA.”

Yoichi Yabe, a maritime photographer with a passion for wooden boats ― so much so that he is building his own wooden sailboat ― journeys to the state of Maine USA, revered as a mecca for wooden boat craftsmanship. In this report, he explores the region’s storied history, vibrant culture, and the lives of those who continue to shape its enduring legacy.

 

今回の取材は矢部氏の友人、ニューイングランド出身のボートビルダーで、現地を良く知るダグラス・ブルックス氏が案内してくれました。彼は1990年に日本に初来日して以来、35年間のあいだに29回来日。日本の和船を研究、その成果を米国で発表している造船学者です。

For this journey, Mr. Yabe was accompanied and guided by his longtime friend, Mr. Douglas Brooks—a seasoned boatbuilder from New England with deep familiarity with the region.

Since his first visit to Japan in 1990, Mr. Brooks has returned 29 times over the course of 35 years. A distinguished scholar of traditional boatbuilding, he has devoted himself to the study of Japanese wooden boats (wasen), sharing his research and insights widely throughout the United States.

 

今回は、2週間の取材で17カ所の木造艇に関わる個性あふれる場所を訪ねました。この40号ではそのうちの9カ所を「前編」として紹介しています。かの有名な歴史ある木造艇専門誌『Wooden Boat』誌のルーツを訪ねたり、造船学校の今をレポートしたり、船好き垂涎の記事で、後編となる次号も楽しみになります。

Over the course of two weeks, they visited many distinctive sites across Maine, each deeply connected to the world of wooden boats.

In this 40th issue, we present the first part of the journey. From tracing the origins of the renowned WoodenBoat magazine to reporting on boatbuilding schools, this feature will captivate wooden boat fans. The forthcoming second installment, to be published in the next winter, vol.41 promises even more to look forward to.

 

大ヒット作『リング』や『らせん』などの作品で知られる作家、鈴木光司さん。国内ではプレジャーボートを所有していますが、2010年ごろからは、毎年のように海外に行ってチャーターヨットでのクルージングを楽しんでいます。今回は15回目のクルーズで初めて訪れたカリブ海を航海しました。その素晴らしいクルージングの模様を、鈴木光司さんご自身が執筆しています。

Koji Suzuki, acclaimed author of bestsellers such as Ring and Spiral, is well known for his literary achievements. While he owns a pleasure boat in Japan, since around 2010 he has made annual voyages abroad, enjoying the freedom of charter yacht cruising.
This year marks his fifteenth such journey, and for the first time, he set sail through the Caribbean. In this issue, Mr. Suzuki himself recounts the highlights of that remarkable cruise.

 

20年間、40号の中から思い出の残る号の話しや、もう一度行ってみたい場所、取材の裏話などを、毎号のように大特集を記事にしてきた矢部洋一氏と編集長が『シードリーム』誌のアーカイブを振り返る特別企画。

Also featured is a special retrospective in which photographer Yoichi Yabe—who has contributed major features to nearly every issue—and Editor-in-Chief Masami Takubo revisit the archives of Sea Dream, reflecting on memorable stories from the past 20 years and 40 issues.
